A few weeks ago London sound crafter,Four Tet (Kieran Hebden), released a new song via his myspace. While not what we’ve come to expect from this avant garde electrician, it was a solid Dance tune, and at 9 min long, evidently intended for club use. Creeping in, the track was something of a cross between trance and house, with a little up-tempo chillout thrown in. Now don’t get me wrong it’s a good song, better than most of the stuff out there, but there was something missing. Something to really get you excited. Something fun. Strange then, that this missing element should not be provided by the original artist, but instead the brilliant Joy Oribison re-mix.
While the original was a slow starter, taking over a minute for… well…. ANYTHING to happen, the remix is, after a short intro, straight in off the starting line. With a dub step beat that defies you not to, in the words of Roger Troutman, “shake it, shake it baby”, the song moves quickly, sliding the vocals in almost unnoticed, the track makes use of the immediate hook of the vocals. But far from blowing it’s top too quickly, the track pulls back nearly as subtly as it crept in only for it to drop back in more energetic than before. About half the time of the original, the faster pacing makes it feel even less so, and with such a lively feel to the track, expect to be hearing this in some of the more reputable house D.j’s sets in the next few weeks.
